Downtown Revitalization Initiative Lands in Canandaigua
February 10, 2025
Governor Kathy Hochul’s commitment to strengthening local communities through targeted investment has taken another step forward with the announcement that the City of Canandaigua will receive $10 million as a part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and NY Forward programs. The funding will be used to transform Canandaigua’s downtown area, enhance the local economy and improve the quality of life for Canandaigua residents.
The Downtown Revitalization Initiative was created in 2016 under the precedent of a “plan-then-act” strategy. An initiative with the overall goal to rebuild New York States economy from the effects of COVID-19, as well as contributing to the reduction of environmental concern by implementing walkable downtowns and promoting the use of public transport and reducing dependence on private vehicles.
Governor Hochul first created the NY Forward program in 2022 to capitalize on the momentum generated by the DRI. A complimentary initiative to accelerate and expand smaller and rural downtown areas. Which will directly enhance cultural and historical qualities that define the local New York State communities.
Through the DRI, New York State has invested in projects aimed to transform urban spaces into vibrant hubs of activity. Governor Hochul recognizes the need to “create lasting change and opportunity for our communities.” Canandaigua mayor, Bob Palumbo indicated the ability the DRI has to “unlock opportunities that create new jobs, add housing, and public amenities in our downtown.”
Canandaigua seeks to greatly improve the overall impact local businesses will have on the economic state of the city. The utilization of the urban space of downtown Canandaigua will support the expansion of local businesses through infrastructure improvements, downtown accessibility and the growth of tourism. The DRI will not only benefit established businesses in Canandaigua. Start-ups and businesses looking to thrive in Canandaigua will also be at the forefront of a prosperous future.
Governor Hochul’s administration ensures the beautiful city of Canandaigua remains a thriving center for commerce, culture and community life. The $10 million award to Canandaigua is a testament to New York States commitment to creating lasting, positive change.
